Turneffe/Belize May 2025

Scuba trip to Turneffe, an island off Belize, followed by several days on the mainland.

Turneffe is a cool place, very remote, about a two hour boat ride from Belize. We stayed at Blackbird Caye, a nice all-inclusive scuba resort with little beach bungalows and a restaurant that prided itself on having a different menu every meal.

It was a rough start to my scuba career, because the wind had picked up right before we arrived, and blew 10-20 mph all day, every day. Seas were rough, and I got seasick the very first boat ride (which was only about a 10 minute ride - but I was last off the boat, big mistake). I ended up not diving at all that day, but just resting in the cabin.

On day 2 I did get in the water. I started using the scopalamine patches, which helped, and also we went to a more sheltered location. It ended up being a good trip where I saw many things, including big sharks, big eagle ray, and other things. I plan to go back at some point with hopefully more optimal conditions.

After diving I went to stay at the Clarissa Falls resort on the mainland of Belize, where the owner is a good friend of my uncle. I did some birding, visited Mayan ruins, and did the classic cave tubing.
